The Healthy Congregations team at McPherson First United Methodist Church is expanding its community impact through four innovative projects in 2025. These initiatives combine nutrition education, gardening, and intergenerational activities to promote wellness throughout McPherson.
JoAnna Mason heads the church garden project, which seeks collaboration with community partners including K-State Extension, STEPMC, Ukrainian refugees, and local blessing box programs. Meanwhile, Judy Sawyer is coordinating with Extension offices to develop meal preparation education for STEPMC participants. Amy Warner oversees funding for fresh produce at intergenerational church events, ensuring healthy options are available at community gatherings.
The team's next event invites congregation members to join STEPMC children for a cookie baking activity on Thursday, March 13, at 5:45 p.m. Participants are welcome to arrive at 5:15 p.m. for an early dinner. This hands-on activity, led by STEPMC childcare staff, creates an opportunity for meaningful interaction between church members and community children.
The Healthy Congregations team welcomes new volunteers and project ideas. Community members with passion for health initiatives are encouraged to contact Amy Warner (organistamy@gmail.com) to discuss potential projects, as funding and partnership opportunities are available. For more information about joining specific projects, interested individuals can contact JoAnna Mason for gardening or Judy Sawyer for meal prep education.
